Fly vs Speed — Movement Module Comparison

Fly and Speed are both movement modules but they change different aspects of player movement. Fly allows airborne movement without elytra. Speed increases ground movement velocity. Both are heavily monitored by server anti-cheat systems, but their detection profiles differ.

Quick answer

Fly enables movement through the air, including vertical movement and hovering. It is the most detectable movement module because vanilla Minecraft does not permit airborne player movement without elytra or levitation. Speed increases ground movement velocity while keeping the player on the ground. It is less detectable at low multipliers and remains one of the most-used movement modules.

Side-by-side comparison

Criterion Fly Speed
Primary function Airborne movement in survival Increase ground movement velocity
Vertical movement Yes — up, down, hover No — ground only
Vanilla equivalent Elytra or levitation Potion of Swiftness
Detection profile Very high — airborne state is checked by most anti-cheat systems Moderate to high — depends on multiplier
Server restrictions Blocked on nearly all protected servers Blocked on most protected servers, allowed with caution
Typical use Anarchy servers, single-player, exploration PvP, anarchy servers, faster traversal

How anti-cheat detects Fly

Server-side checks monitor the player's Y-coordinate and airborne state. Vanilla Minecraft does not allow a player to remain airborne without falling or gliding. Any pattern that shows sustained airborne motion without gravity effects is flagged. Some anti-cheat systems also compare server-side and client-side position reports — Fly creates discrepancies that stand out immediately.

How anti-cheat detects Speed

Speed detection focuses on ground movement velocity. Vanilla sprint speed is well-defined. Any movement faster than that triggers a check. Speed modules with low multipliers (1.3x to 1.5x) can pass on servers with lenient thresholds. High multipliers (2x and above) are flagged almost immediately. Some Speed implementations use bunny-hop patterns that mimic legit movement more closely, reducing detection risk.

Combining Fly and Speed

Enabling both at once increases detection risk substantially. Speed while flying produces movement that is obviously non-vanilla. Some clients offer a combined "Fly Speed" setting that only affects the Fly module. Check client documentation to see how the modules interact.

Which one should you use?

If you are on an anarchy server or playing single-player, both modules are safe to use without concern. If you are on a protected server, Speed with conservative settings carries less risk than Fly. Fly is almost universally detected on servers with active anti-cheat.
